What is the CDHCI Program in Alberta?
CDHCI stands for Client Directed Home Care Invoicing.
It’s a publicly funded home care option in Alberta administered through Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Blue Cross. Instead of receiving traditional AHS home care, eligible clients can choose their preferred home care provider agency (registered with Alberta Blue Cross), and that agency bills the government directly for approved care services.
This option gives clients more choice, flexibility, and control over their home care while still accessing government-funded support.
What CDHCI Means for Our Clients
-
You Have More Choice
With CDHCI, you can select your home care agency of choice (like Nurse on Wheels Inc.) from the provincial list of approved providers. Alberta Blue Cross

-
You Have Control Over Care
Rather than being assigned a caregiver or schedule by AHS, you can work with your chosen provider to schedule and direct your services in a way that fits your needs. Alberta Health Services

-
Direct Billing & Reduced Administration
Your care provider handles administrative tasks and bills Alberta Blue Cross directly for services up to your approved hours, so you don’t pay upfront for covered care. Alberta Blue Cross
This means you don’t need to manage payroll, hiring, or tax paperwork — the agency does that for you. Comfort Keepers

-
Tailored Care
CDHCI is especially useful if you want:
-
More personalized care or caregiver continuity
-
Care that reflects cultural or language needs
-
Short-term or intensive home support (e.g., post-hospital recovery, end-of-life care, respite care) Alberta Health Services

-
Where It Applies
CDHCI services are only for clients living safely at home in the community — not in group homes, assisted living facilities, or settings owned by the care provider. Alberta Blue Cross
